At The EYE MDs, our goal is to provide patients with the best possible vision for their lifestyle after cataract surgery. Traditional intraocular lenses (IOLs) offer significant improvements in vision, but they come with a limitation—once implanted, they cannot be adjusted without additional surgery. This means that vision outcomes rely on preoperative measurements, which while precise, cannot always predict exactly how a patient’s eye will heal.

That’s why we are strong advocates for the Light Adjustable Lens™ (LAL®/LAL+®), the first and only IOL that allows for customized vision adjustments after surgery. This innovative lens technology offers patients a level of personalization that was previously impossible.

What Makes the Light Adjustable Lens Different?

Unlike fixed standard lenses, the Light Adjustable Lens is made from a special photosensitive material that responds to ultraviolet (UV) light treatments. Once the eye has healed after surgery, we use a Light Delivery Device™ (LDD™) to precisely adjust the shape and power of the lens. This allows us to fine-tune vision based on real-world feedback from the patient, resulting in truly custom vision.

Why We Recommend It to Our Patients

Customizable Vision: Patients don’t have to make final decisions about their vision before surgery. Instead, they can experience life with their new lens and provide input on their adjustments.

Precise Adjustments: Light adjustments allow patients to optimize their vision after surgery, leading to more customized visual outcomes.

How the Adjustment Process Works

2-4 weeks after cataract surgery, patients undergo up to three light treatments to fine-tune their vision, followed by two “lock-in” treatments to finalize the prescription. These treatments are painless, take only a few minutes, and are performed in the office.

Who Is a Good Candidate?

Many cataract surgery patients can benefit from the Light Adjustable Lens, especially those who:

Want to have a say in their visual outcome.

Want to customize their vision based on their lifestyle and real-life experiences.

Have eyes where outcomes may be difficult to predict.

The Light Adjustable Lens represents a significant advancement in cataract surgery, giving patients and surgeons unprecedented control over vision outcomes. We believe this technology sets a new standard for flexibility and patient satisfaction.

If you’re considering cataract surgery and want to learn more about whether the Light Adjustable Lens is right for you, we invite you to schedule a consultation with our team at The EYE MDs.
